Brief

Marjory Kinnon School approached Austin Reynolds to supply and install a series of communication stations across various outdoor areas of the school. These included signs for the outdoor gym, early years playground, climbing area, swings, sandpit, and a large mobile master communication station.
The objective was to create signage that would support young learners and those with additional needs helping them communicate emotions, ask for help, and engage non-verbally with confidence. The signs needed to be visually engaging, easy to understand, and functional for both students and staff, enhancing communication throughout the school environment.

Solution

Working closely with the school, we developed vibrant, inclusive signs that are both educational and visually appealing. Each sign was tailored to its environment while maintaining a consistent style to ensure familiarity and ease of use for the students.
To ensure durability and longevity, especially in outdoor conditions, we used robust, weather resistant materials. The graphics were digitally printed for clarity and long-lasting quality. Installation methods were carefully chosen based on location, ranging from channel and backing strips for railings, to self-adhesive and screw fixed options for other surfaces.
The result is a comprehensive signage solution that not only supports inclusive communication but also enhances the learning environment for all students at Marjory Kinnon School.

Outcome

The new communication stations have been enthusiastically received by both staff and students at Marjory Kinnon School.
The clear, engaging visuals are proving to be highly effective in supporting non-verbal communication, emotional expression, and
independent interaction among learners with additional needs. Teachers have reported improved engagement and confidence from students,
particularly in outdoor settings where communication can be more challenging. The mobile master communication station has also added flexibility,
allowing staff to place the signage in different learning zones as needed.

Thanks to the durable materials and weather resistant finishes, the signs are withstanding daily use and
environmental exposure, ensuring long term value for the school. Overall, the project has successfully enhanced the school’s inclusive
communication strategy and created a more supportive and accessible learning environment for all.
By giving students, the tools to clearly express themselves, our communication stations help promote independence, emotional development,
and stronger connections between students and staff.
